● VACCINATIONS AND IMMUNISATIONS
We strongly encourage all children to complete their routine childhood immunisations. We also encourage additional childhood immunisation against Hepatitis B, Meningitis and Chickenpox and Human Papilloma Virus. Certain “at risk” patients would benefit from additional immunisations (Influenza and Pneumonia).
Please feel free to discuss immunisation issues with the doctor.
● TETANUS
Tetanus is a life threatening disease characterised by muscular rigidity and agonising contractions. If is fortunately fairly rare, mainly because of vaccination.
For those who have had their normal childhood immunisations, which include tetanus, a booster is recommended. If you think you may not be fully immunised, or that your immunity has lapsed, please make an appointment with the Doctor. Following an injury you may require additional booster dose. Please discuss with your Doctor.

If you are travelling overseas, you may need extra vaccinations. Please contact the surgery at least 6 weeks prior to travelling.

● PAP SMEAR TESTS
Smear tests are a screening test for women involving an examination of the cervix (neck of the womb). Sample cells are removed from the cervix to check for changes, which occur prior to cancer developing. These changes can be treated and cancer prevented.
We recommend that all women up to the age of 70 years who are or have been sexually active should have regular smears unless otherwise advised by the Doctor.
Pap smear is a screening test and in a small number of women it may fail to detect abnormalities of the cervix. If you experience any symptoms, you should make another appointment to discuss them with the doctor.
● BREAST EXAMINATION
It is a good idea for all women to examine their own breasts regularly for lumps. If you are not sure how to do this your doctor will be able to show you. We also suggest breast examination by the doctor annually. This is usually performed during a Pap smear examination.
We encourage women over age 50 to have screen mammography every 2 years. In some instances the doctor may advise more breast investigations or earlier screening as he/she see appropriate.
● PROSTATE SCREENING FOR MEN
It is recommended that all men over the age of 50 years attend Bi-annually for a check-up, particularly if there is a family history of prostate disease or cancer.
● BLOOD PRESSURE
High blood pressure increases the risk of heart attacks and strokes. Reducing blood pressure can reduce these risks. Treatment does not always require tablets. All adults are advised to have their blood pressure and cholesterol checked regularly. If you have not had yours checked recently, please ask the doctor.
